Sample Nature Camp
Please Note: This is not necessarily the way things go all the time. There are many other games and activities that are incorporated into the program. The type of games and activities incorporated depend on the group dynamic and their interests.
Monday
9:00a.m. - Meet kids at Conservation Place, assign walking partners, 15 minute walk into Gibson's Field, talk a little about the Corduroy Brook Project in terms of its history and importance.
9:30a.m. - Make name tags (foam cut-outs & yarn, usually the shape of flowers or fish, etc.
9:50a.m - Play Nature Charades
10:15a.m. - Snack time & playground time
10:45a.m. - Walk the trail to collect nature items for collages (dried leaves, twigs, wildflowers, etc) Return to Gibson's Field to make collages.
11:20a.m. - Predator/Prey game using noisemaker and blindfold.
11:40a.m. - Walk back to Conservation place for kids to meet their rides.
Tuesday
9:00a.m. - Meet kids and walk into field. Stop at boardwalk crossing marsh and look for ducks, birds and other wetland inhabitants.
9:30a.m. - Make binoculars using paper towel rolls.
9:45a.m. - Show poster of marshland animals with a brief description of each. Go on a nature hike looking for critters using the binoculars (sparnytickles, birds, bugs, etc)
10:30a.m. - Snack time.
10:50a.m. - Take group picture to include with loot bags at the end of camp.
11:00a.m. - Have a small campfire (roast marshmallows) Learn and sing a nature song.
11:40a.m. - Walk back to Conservation Place for the kids to meet their rides.
Wednesday
9:00a.m. - Meet kids and walk into field.
9:30a.m. - Make bird feeders using 2L pop bottles. Pass out bags of bird seed to each child.
10:00a.m. - Conservation Corps Green Team visits camp. Green Team coordinates games and activities for kids until walk out time. Games and activities are closely related to the Corps mandate (conservation of energy, recycling, global warming) One example is a game called the recycling relay where teams are forms to race to gather recyclables spread around the field.
11:40a.m. - Walk back to Conservation Place.
Thursday
9:00a.m. - Meet kids and walk into field.
9:30a.m. - Decorate faces made of paper for "lawn heads". Glue paper face to plastic cups, fill cups with soil, sprinkle grass seed on top, add water. (Lawn Head will grow grass hair)
10:00a.m. - Walk to grassy area for picnic and snack.
10:45a.m. - Rock painting.
11:10a.m. - Play nature Bingo.
11:40a.m. - Walk back to Conservation Place.
Friday
9:00a.m. - Meet kids and walk into field.
9:30a.m. - Migration Game (kids have races to finish line, but must act like certain animals while getting there)
9:45a.m. - Scavenger Hunt. Assign teams and have the camp councilors act as team leaders.
10:30a.m. - Snack Time
10:45a.m. - Walk to another area of trail emphasize the presence of beaver activity.
11:15a.m. - I-spy Game.
11:30a.m. - Pass out loot bags and crafts that were done during the week. Walk out to Conservation Place. Present children with participation certificates before leaving for home.
